N.O Workshop_ Laurie Schaerer

This is a very simple photograph, but the image of a small life growing out of a building commemorating a death caused me to stop and look.  It even made me think of how we were given a new life in the death of Jesus.

I found this mausoleum to be interesting because I think it gives an idea of what the person may have been like in life.  Among acres and acres of traditional white stone markers and mausoleums, this red brick building says "Hey, look at me".  I imagine that this person, in life, must have been full of fun, and the life of the party.   Or maybe an entrepreneur who came up with some really cool business idea.  Or, maybe, just loud and obnoxious.  Either way, I think this person was sure to get noticed.

Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected. Most of my photographs are of people; they are seen simply, as through the eyes of the man in the street. There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough--there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph. It is difficult to describe this thin line where matter ends and mind begins. - Robert Frank

The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE. - Ernst Haas
