A good photograph is one that communicate a
fact, touches the heart, leaves the viewer a changed person for having
seen it. It is, in a word, effective.

I love the people I photograph. I mean, they're
my friends. I've never met most of them or I don't know them at all, yet
through my images I live with them. At the same time, they are symbols.
The people in my pictures aren't Mr. Jones or Mr. Smith or whatever;
they're someone that crossed my path or I've crossed their path, and
through the medium of photography I've been able to make a good picture
of that encounter. They have a life of their own, but they are also are
symbols. I would say that I respect the viewer, but I don't want to tell
him everything. Hopefully, there's an element of mystery involved. I
like him to look at a picture and say "Well, that that reminds me of
someone," and make up a little story in his head, make him smile,
brighten up his day. I think this is what I'm trying to achieve with my
photographs.

Nothing is ever the same twice because
everything is always gone forever, and yet each moment has infinite

Once a woman who does street work said to me,
'I've never photographed anyone I haven't asked first.' I said to her,
'Suppose Cartier-Bresson asked the man who jumped the puddle to do it
again - it never would have been the same. Start stealing!'

I don't believe a person has a style. What people have is a way of photographing what is inside them. What is there comes out.

What is a good photograph? I cannot say. A
photograph is tied to the time, what is good today may be a cliché
tomorrow. The problem of the photographer is to discover his own
language, a visual ABC. The picture represents the feelings and point of
view of the intelligence behind the camera. This disease of our age is
boredom and a good photographer must combat it. The way to do this is by
invention – by surprise. When I say a good picture has surprise value I
mean that it stimulates my thinking and intrigues me. The best way to
achieve surprise quality is by avoiding clichés. Imitation is the
greatest danger of the young photographer.

I take photographs with love, so I try to make
them art objects. But I make them for myself first and foremost--that is
important. If they are art objects at the same time, that's fine with
me.

You've got to struggle against the pollution of
intelligence in order to become an animal with very sharp instincts - a
sort of intuitive medium - so that to photograph becomes a magical act,
and slowly other more suggestive images begin to appear behind the
visible image, for which the photographer cannot be held responsible.

I knew from a very early age, that what I saw on
tv had nothing to do with real life. So I wanted to make a record of
real life. That included having a camera with me at all times.
