What is a good photograph? I cannot say. A
photograph is tied to the time, what is good today may be a cliché
tomorrow. The problem of the photographer is to discover his own
language, a visual ABC. The picture represents the feelings and point of
view of the intelligence behind the camera. This disease of our age is
boredom and a good photographer must combat it. The way to do this is by
invention – by surprise. When I say a good picture has surprise value I
mean that it stimulates my thinking and intrigues me. The best way to
achieve surprise quality is by avoiding clichés. Imitation is the
greatest danger of the young photographer.

One of these days, I'm going to publish a book of all the pictures I did not take. It is going to be a huge hit.

I take photographs with love, so I try to make
them art objects. But I make them for myself first and foremost--that is
important. If they are art objects at the same time, that's fine with
me.

You've got to struggle against the pollution of
intelligence in order to become an animal with very sharp instincts - a
sort of intuitive medium - so that to photograph becomes a magical act,
and slowly other more suggestive images begin to appear behind the
visible image, for which the photographer cannot be held responsible.

I knew from a very early age, that what I saw on
tv had nothing to do with real life. So I wanted to make a record of
real life. That included having a camera with me at all times.
